A devoted advocate for environmental rights, Justice Kakuru went on to establish the non-governmental organization GREENWATCH in 1995, a testament to his dedicated efforts in safeguarding our planet's well-being.
Honorable Justice Kakuru's Green Legacy
Justice Kenneth Kakuru was a Ugandan jurist who served on the Court of Appeal of Uganda from 2013 until his passing in 2023. A graduate of Makerere University, he was the founding partner of Kakuru & Company Advocates (est. 1987) and, in 1995, founded Greenwatch — a non-governmental organisation dedicated to upholding the right to a clean and healthy environment in Uganda.
Throughout his career he fought landmark environmental battles — from halting the illegal export of chimpanzees to challenging the alienation of wetland land. He was described by Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny-Dollo as "fearless, incorruptible, and utterly committed to justice." Every corner of his life — from his country home in Rwebushuri to his school grounds — was adorned with trees and flowers, a living testament to his love of nature.

Greenwatch
Founded by Justice Kakuru in 1995, Greenwatch is Uganda's foremost public-interest environmental law organisation. Led today by Executive Director Samantha Atukunda Kakuru Mwesigwa (Justice Kakuru's daughter), Greenwatch provides legal, scientific, and advocacy support to KKERI's restoration and energy projects. The partnership between KKERI and Greenwatch creates a powerful combination of on-the-ground action and legal protection for Uganda's environment.
St. Theresa SS & Forestry Volunteers
St. Theresa Secondary School in Kasese has established a 10,000-seedling nursery in partnership with KKERI, cultivating indigenous species, fruit trees, and bamboo for riverbank restoration. We are also grateful for the support of dedicated volunteers from Uganda's forestry institutions, who bring specialist knowledge and hands-on expertise to our tree planting and ecological restoration work in the field.
Kasese District Local Government
KKERI works in close collaboration with the Kasese District Disaster Management Committee and local leadership including the LC3 Chairperson of Kisinga Town Council. Together, we align our restoration work with district-level disaster preparedness plans and support the introduction of community by-laws to regulate deforestation — building a legal and institutional framework that protects the gains of our on-the-ground work.
